[...this is what happens when an insomniac dreams]

"When you’re young, not much matters.

When you find something that you care about, that’s all you got.

When you go to sleep at night, you dream of music. When you wake up, it’s the same thing. It’s right there in your face, you can’t skip it. Sometimes when you’re young, the only place to go is inside. Music is what I love. Take that away from me… and I really got nothing."

PLUR - Peace, Love, Unity, Respect.
The code of the raver. We come, we rave, we love. That's the beauty of EDM. The music is blasting, the lights are shooting through the smoke filled room, your body moves as if taken over by the beat. And as you look around, you smile and realize at that second every person in the room is your best friend now. There's no judgement, worries, race, or religion - just people. A solid beat, a good vibe, and the knowledge that everyone around you truly understands what it is to be at peace with everyone else. They are willing to love anyone for who they are. You can feel the unity that comes from knowing that you are truly above all worries. And you realize that everyone, including yourself, respects everyone around them. Then you realize the music is bumpin', the people are groovin', and you let yourself go and live.
That's PLUR. It's the anthem of the raver, and the ideal by which we operate. It is a conscious choice to accept, love, and respect everyone around us. And it's fucking awesome.
"Could you think it over?
When we get older,
I'll still want you here with me,
Darling, I hope that you agree,
There's something that takes place,
Whenever we embrace,
I'm hoping that you take this chance,
Of steppin' out, to dance..."
"We were in heaven, you and I,
When I lay with you, and close my eyes,
Our fingers touch the sky...

I’m sorry baby,
You were the sun and moon to me,
I’ll never get over you, you’ll never get over me..."
ASOT. 'nuff said.
"I'll collect myself and crawl through the shadows,
Reach up my hands to the sky and shout out,
I'll never make, these same mistakes again.
Cause someone up there holds the key to my heart,
And do everything to tear it apart,
And never allow myself to let you win,

When all I want, is for you to see,
The side that I don't show to anyone,
In fear that they may turn and run,
Alone, and incomplete,
No more tears to cry, and no more blood to bleed.

I'll fall forever endlessly
When you should be the ground beneath my feet -
The better half of me..."
"But with that moon in the sky
Who wants to be alone?
And when the starts shine so bright
Who wants to be alone?"
"We will not compromise who we are to be accepted by the crowd,
We want substance in the place of popularity,
We want to think our own thoughts,
We want love, not lies,
We want knowledge, understanding and peace,
We will not lose, because we are not losers,
We are LASERS."
"Damn it feels good to be a Taylor,
To rock camo shorts, Chuck T's, and smoke papers."

T.G.O.D.
"But I don't do drugs, just weed,
Caution flags wave, and fuck it I still speed,
Spending more time in the clouds, than I spend on the ground,
Do the opposite, fuck takin' advice from these clowns."
“So much shit is on my brain, try hard to maintain
Sit and analyze my thoughts, at times wonder if I’m sane
Nobody truly know me, got me feeling so alone,
They wonder what’s on my mind, what’s lingering in my dome,
I tell ‘em ain’t nothing wrong, I deal with it on my own,
I deal with it on my own.

Yeah, this is my blog. Name's nas. 21, UC Davis. Putting the "pro" in "procrastinate" and the "fun" in "dysfunctional", yet still manages to succeed (so far). You'll find a bunch of EDM related stuff, and a good smattering of funny shit, hipster pictures, insensitive jokes, and/or anything related to Doctor Who, Supernatural, Psych, Parks and Rec, Workaholics, and of course, my favorite artist Kaskade. My main girls are Mary & Molly, but you won't find much of that on my blog here - to each his own, and I'm not condoning anything. I'm probably gonna be too lazy to even update this or finish this sente

During the Bubonic Plague, doctors wore these bird-like masks to avoid becoming sick. They would fill the beaks with spices and rose petals, so they wouldn’t have to smell the rotting bodies.

A theory during the Bubonic Plague was that the plague was caused by evil spirits. To scare the spirits away, the masks were intentionally designed to be creepy.

Mission fucking accomplished

Okay so I love this but it doesn’t cover the half of why the design is awesome and actually borders on making sense.

It wasn’t just that they didn’t want to smell the infected and dead, they thought it was crucial to protecting themselves. They had no way of knowing about what actually caused the plague, and so one of the other theories was that the smell of the infected all by itself was evil and could transmit the plague. So not only would they fill their masks with aromatic herbs and flowers, they would also burn fires in public areas, so that the smell of the smoke would “clear the air”. This all related to the miasma theory of contagion, which was one of the major theories out there until the 19th century. And it makes sense, in a way. Plague victims smelled awful, and there’s a general correlation between horrible septic smells and getting horribly sick if you’re around what causes them for too long.

You can see now that we’ve got two different theories as to what caused the plague that were worked into the design. That’s because the whole thing was an attempt by the doctors to cover as many bases as they could think of, and we’re still not done.

The glass eyepieces. They were either darkened or red, not something you generally want to have to contend with when examining patients. But the plague might be spread by eye contact via the evil eye, so best to ward that off too.

The illustration shows a doctor holding a stick. This was an examination tool, that helped the doctors keep some distance between themselves and the infected. They already had gloves on, but the extra level of separation was apparently deemed necessary. You could even take a pulse with it. Or keep people the fuck away from you, which was apparently a documented use.

Finally, the robe. It’s not just to look fancy, the cloth was waxed, as were all of the rest of their clothes. What’s one of the properties of wax? Water-based fluids aren’t absorbed by it. This was the closest you could get to a sterile, fully protecting garment back then. Because at least one person along the line was smart enough to think “Gee, I’d really rather not have the stuff coming out of those weeping sores anywhere on my person”.

So between all of these there’s a real sense that a lot of real thought was put into making sure the doctors were protected, even if they couldn’t exactly be sure from what. They worked with what information they had. And frankly, it’s a great design given what was available! You limit exposure to aspirated liquids, limit exposure to contaminated liquids already present, you limit contact with the infected. You also don’t give fleas any really good place to hop onto. That’s actually useful.

Beyond that, there were contracts the doctors would sign before they even got near a patient. They were to be under quarantine themselves, they wouldn’t treat patients without a custodian monitoring them and helping when something had to be physically contacted, and they would not treat non-plague patients for the duration. There was an actual system in place by the time the plague doctors really became a thing to make sure they didn’t infect anyone either.

These guys were the product of the scientific process at work, and the scientific process made a bitchin’ proto-hazmat suit. And containment protocols!

reblogging for the sweet history lesson

Reblogging because of the History lesson and because the masks, the masks are cool

no just no the mask aren’t cool they are creepy as fuck

yes, they need positive reinforcement, but participation trophies are not that reinforcement

ihadthebestdays:

Do you ever have that one line in a song that just means the world to you and has this deeper meaning that you feel just explains everything and then your friends listen to it and are just like that’s cool but you’re like NO  THAT LINE IS JUST EVERYTHING HOW DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND and you realize just how much music means to you

pretty much every post rock song title, really
